About
Welcome to the blog dedicated to restoring the Colonial Gardens Building at 818 West Kenwood Drive, Louisville, Kentucky 40214.
Preservation is the first step, restoration is the goal. Restoring Colonial Gardens will preserve the heritage of the Iroquois Park and Kenwood Hill Neighborhoods.
With this blog we are going to educate the public on the advantages and process of enabling this building to once again become a contributing part of our community.
The following are some of the approaches we will take here:
- Provide a visual and descriptive survey of local restoration efforts that will demonstrate linkages between Colonial Gardens and other buildings that were once in a similar or worse state of deterioration.
- Identify developers with desire and experience to revitalize Colonial Gardens.
- Detail historical and community significance of the Colonial Gardens site from 1902 to present.
- Provide insight to the fact that the historical details of the original architecture are largely still intact.
- Demonstrate that the building is structurally sound, most issues classified as cosmetic or superficial.
- Compare the cost between restoration vs. tear down and rebuild.
- Supply concept drawings of what a restored Colonial Gardens could look like.
- Explain the value of maintaining the existing Colonial Gardens Building based on keeping the existing grandfathers intact vs. conforming to modern day Land Development Codes (eg: number of parking spaces per square foot).
